Sudan man forced to ‘marry’ goat

Published by Rong under ramblings

A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal.

The goat’s owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders.

They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi.

"We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said.

Mr Alifi, Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat.

"When I asked him: ‘What are you doing there?’, he fell off the back of the goat, so I captured and tied him up".

Mr Alifi then called elders to decide how to deal with the case.

"They said I should not take him to the police, but rather let him pay a dowry for my goat because he used it as his wife," Mr Alifi told the newspaper.

It’s hard to beat the logic of these elders. One can only imagine the long drawn out case that this kind of scandalous crime would create in the U.S. Why there would be law suits and court trials that would frivolously tie up our judicial system for months if not years. It seems to me that these wise gentlemen clearly deduced this mans intent as well as his personal needs and suggested a perfect solution where by both parties turned out to be winners.   I think the next time we have an opening on the Supreme Court we should look towards the elders of the Upper Nile State to assist us in filling the vacancy.

Memorable Quotes

Published by Rong under ramblings

Name the television series that these quotes came from:

  • It’s easy to find something worth dying for. Do you have anything worth living for?

  • I used to think it was a terrible thing that life was so unfair. Then I thought, ‘what if life *were* fair, and all of the terrible things that happen to us came because we really deserved them?’ Now I take great comfort in the general unfairness and hostility of the universe.
  • No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power tyrants and dictators cannot stand.
  • When others do a foolish thing, you should tell them it is a foolish thing. They can still continue to do it, but at least the truth is where it needs to be.
  • A stroke of the brush does not guarantee art from the bristles.
  • If I take a lamp and shine it toward the wall, a bright spot will appear on the wall. The lamp is our search for truth… for understanding. Too often, we assume that the light on the wall is God, but the light is not the goal of the search, it is the result of the search. The more intense the search, the brighter the light on the wall. The brighter the light on the wall, the greater the sense of revelation upon seeing it. Similarly, someone who does not search – who does not bring a lantern – sees nothing. What we perceive as God is the by-product of our search for God. It may simply be an appreciation of the light… pure and unblemished… not understanding that it comes from us. Sometimes we stand in front of the light and assume that we are the center of the universe – God looks astonishingly like we do – or we turn to look at our shadow and assume that all is darkness. If we allow ourselves to get in the way, we defeat the purpose, which is to use the light of our search to illuminate the wall in all its beauty and in all its flaws; and in so doing, better understand the world around us.
  • The avalanche has already started; it is too late for the pebbles to vote.
  • The universe began with a word. But which came first: the word or the thought behind the word? You can’t create language without thought, and you can’t conceive a thought without language, so which created the other, and thus created the universe?
  • Now we gave you a promise. And we are bound by that promise! And damn you for asking for it! And damn me for agreeing to it! And damn all of us to hell because that is exactly where we’re going! We talked about peace! You didn’t *want* peace! We talked about co-operation! You didn’t *want* co-operation! You want war! Is that it? You want a war! Well, you’ve got a war!
  • I am a Ranger. We walk in the dark places no others may enter. We stand on a bridge, and no one may pass. We live for the One! We DIE for the ONE!
