On Belay!

climbingOn Belay is the phrase one shouts out to their climbing partner signaling that they are tied in and are preparing to ascend or rappel. Sounds simple enough but think about it. What you’re really saying is, “I’m now trusting you to take in the line and that you’re prepared in case I get into trouble.” With out being at all melodramatic, “I’m putting my life in your hands. If something happens to the primary rappel rope, or I lose my grip, you’re the only thing between me and the ground!” Because of this, your climbing partner is obviously someone that you need to be able to trust. They may be a total goof in every other aspect of their life, but when it comes to the task at hand you want someone who is serious, deliberate and dependable. You want someone who is totally focused on you.

I’ve mentioned before the need that I’ve been feeling to get into a men’s group. I’ve desired to get in with a group of men who can spiritually challenge me and hold me accountable. Like in climbing this means being able to wholly trust another person. It’s a scary proposition to consider. The approach can be difficult or can stop you from ever reaching the base. But, I know from past experience, that once you get off the ground the rewards are exhilarating and the views are stupendous.
